AvP2 is shutdown but AvP1 and GE aren't

Last summer they shutdown the Aliens versus Predator 2 multiplayer servers, a very unpopular move that was (and still is) highly protested by the gaming community (since they also shutdown like 50 other games on the same day, since I think they all used the same online gaming service, and they decided to shut it down). Well, the Aliens versus Predator and Aliens versus Predator: Gold Edition multiplayer servers are still up, isn't that a bit strange? Anyway Aliens versus Predator 3 is coming out soon, which is what tempted me to ask this.
